Uganda FAQs: What to Know Before You Visit

Uganda, famously dubbed the “Pearl of Africa” by Winston Churchill, is a land of dense emerald jungles, snow-capped mountains, and the expansive waters of Lake Victoria. It is one of the few places on Earth where you can track mountain gorillas in the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and chimpanzees in Kibale, while also spotting “tree-climbing lions” in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The landscape is dominated by the Nile River, which thunders through Murchison Falls, offering world-class white-water rafting and diverse birdwatching. Beyond its wildlife, Uganda is celebrated for the exceptional warmth and hospitality of its people, its vibrant bustling markets in Kampala, and a tropical climate that remains pleasant year-round.

It ranges from moderate to challenging depending on terrain. Treks can take 2–6 hours, but the one-hour encounter with gorillas is unforgettable.

You can see endangered mountain gorillas in:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Uganda offers:

  • Mountain gorilla trekking (not available in Kenya)

  • Lush rainforests instead of vast savannah plains

  • Fewer crowds in national parks

  • A strong primate tracking experience (chimpanzees & more)

  • Source of the Nile adventure activities

Uganda is more intimate, green, and jungle-focused compared to classic savannah safaris.

Uganda was famously described as the “Pearl of Africa” by Winston Churchill because of its lush landscapes, abundant wildlife, fertile land, and friendly people.
