Day 1: Fly from Arusha to Kigoma & Visit Dr. Leakey Museum

 Journey to Gombe National Park

This 4 days will take you on an exciting journey from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to the wild beauty of Gombe National Park. You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport for your scheduled flight to Kigoma

Upon arrival, visit Ujiji Village. Here, you will see the historic Dr. Livingstone’s Memorial before continuing to Kibirizi port. Next, enjoy a scenic boat ride on Lake Tanganyika. It will take you toward Gombe National Park.

After arrival, enjoy lunch at your lodge and relax briefly. Then, head out for an afternoon chimpanzee trek. Explore lush forest trails and rolling hills. Later, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay in a peaceful natural setting.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Begin your day early with a guided trek into the forest to track chimpanzees. Your guide will lead you through dense vegetation, following calls and fresh tracks until you locate a troop.

Spend time observing their natural behaviors feeding, grooming, and social interactions an unforgettable and intimate wildlife encounter. After the trek, return to camp for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon, you may visit the Jane Goodall Research Center or enjoy the tranquil lakeside setting.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trek & Lake Tanganyika Relaxation

Waterfall Hike & Lake Experience

After breakfast, set out for a guided chimpanzee trek in Gombe National Park. Explore forest valleys and lush walking trails. The area is rich in wildlife and natural beauty.

During the hike, visit the scenic Kakombe Waterfall. It is surrounded by dense vegetation and birdlife. Around midday, return for lunch and a short rest.

Afterward, enjoy a relaxed afternoon at the lodge or by Lake Tanganyika. You may swim, take a boat ride, or simply unwind by the water.

In the evening, transfer back toward Kigoma. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a peaceful setting.

Safari Frequently Asked Questions

The trek can be moderately strenuous. It involves hiking through steep, forested terrain and thick vegetation. A basic level of fitness is recommended.

The dry season (May to October) is best for trekking as trails are less slippery, though chimps are easier to find in the lower slopes during the wet season (February to June) when food is abundant.

While Jane Goodall’s legacy is everywhere, she is rarely at the park. You will, however, visit the research stations where her groundbreaking work continues.

For safety and conservation reasons, the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking in Gombe is typically 15 years old.

Gombe is accessible only by boat. Most travelers fly into Kigoma from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, then take a 1–2 hour boat ride to the park.

Bring sturdy hiking boots, long trousers/sleeves (to protect against insects), a rain jacket, high-SPF sunscreen, and a good camera with a zoom lens.

While sightings are very likely (over 90% success rate), they are wild animals. Trackers head out early to locate the nests to maximize your chances.

Once your group locates a troop, you are permitted exactly one hour of observation to minimize stress on the primates.
