Uganda National Parks and Reserves

The Pearl of Africa’s Untamed Wilderness and Primate Paradise

Uganda’s national parks and reserves form the backbone of its world-renowned wildlife tourism, managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which oversees 10 national parks, 12 wildlife reserves, several community wildlife areas, and sanctuaries. These protected areas showcase an extraordinary variety of ecosystems—from dense rainforests and misty mountains to vast savannas, dramatic waterfalls, and rift valley lakes—supporting over 1,000 bird species, 18 primate types (including the highest chimpanzee density globally), and iconic mammals like elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and giraffes. In 2026, these parks remain relatively uncrowded compared to East African neighbors, with improved infrastructure, sustainable tourism focus, and strong conservation efforts making them more accessible yet authentically wild.

The crown jewels include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both UNESCO World Heritage sites and home to nearly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas—perfect for the bucket-list gorilla trekking experience amid thick, misty forests. Kibale National Park stands out as the primate capital, with chimpanzee tracking and habituation experiences alongside over a dozen other primate species. For classic savanna safaris, Queen Elizabeth National Park delivers diverse habitats, boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel teeming with hippos and birds, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, and volcanic landscapes. Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest, features the explosive Nile River cascade, big game drives, and boat trips spotting elephants and crocodiles. Remote gems like Kidepo Valley National Park offer uncrowded wilderness with dramatic valleys, while Lake Mburo National Park provides easy-access game viewing near Kampala, ideal for shorter trips.
