Located within Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). Often overshadowed by nearby Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a less crowded, scenic, and rewarding trekking experience.
The climb to the summit, Socialist Peak, takes you through diverse landscapes including lush rainforest, open moorland, and alpine desert, with incredible views along the way. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru treks are accompanied by armed rangers, as hikers may encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and various bird species within the park.
One of the highlights of climbing Mount Meru is the breathtaking view of Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise from the summit, creating a truly unforgettable moment.
Mount Meru is also an excellent option for acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro, or as a standalone trekking adventure for travelers seeking a quieter and more intimate mountain experience.
