Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya’s most compact yet wildlife-rich safari destinations, located in the Great Rift Valley about 160 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. Unlike the vast open plains of Mara or Serengeti, Lake Nakuru offers a more enclosed and scenic landscape — built around a shallow alkaline lake surrounded by acacia woodland, rocky escarpments, and sweeping viewpoints overlooking the valley floor. The park covers approximately 188 square kilometers, creating an intimate safari setting where wildlife encounters feel close and personal.
Lake Nakuru is especially known for its strong rhino conservation success, making it one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos in their natural habitat. The lake itself attracts seasonal flocks of flamingos and other water birds, creating changing shades of pink along the shoreline depending on water levels. Rothschild’s giraffes roam freely here, along with lions, leopards, buffalo, zebras, and numerous antelope species. What makes Lake Nakuru special for our guests at Colours Africa Tours & Safaris is its diversity within a small area — dramatic Rift Valley scenery, strong conservation impact, and excellent wildlife viewing all in a manageable space, making it a perfect addition to a Kenya safari itinerary or a smooth combination with the Maasai Mara.
