8-Day Lemosho Route Trek on Mount Kilimanjaro

A high-success-rate itinerary designed for optimal acclimatization and summit success

The Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is widely regarded as the most scenic path to the summit, offering diverse landscapes and excellent acclimatization for a higher success rate. This carefully designed 8-day itinerary allows for a gradual ascent, giving trekkers the best chance to safely and comfortably reach Uhuru Peak.

The journey begins on the remote western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, leading you through lush rainforests, expansive moorlands, and striking alpine deserts before joining the southern circuit. Compared to shorter 6- or 7-day options, the 8-day trek provides more time for altitude adjustment, making it ideal for both first-time climbers and experienced adventurers.

For those seeking a more demanding start, the Shira Route is an alternative, beginning at a higher elevation with a steeper acclimatization profile. However, the Lemosho Route remains the preferred choice for its balance of beauty, wilderness, and summit success.

Safari Frequently Asked Questions

The 8-day Lemosho route has one of the highest success rates on the mountain, typically estimated between 90% and 95%  this is due to fact that the extra days allow your body to adapt to the lower oxygen levels gradually. The “short day” on Day 6 (Karanga to Barafu) is a game-changer, ensuring you are not exhausted before the midnight summit start.

It is classified as a strenuous but non-technical climb.

Endurance: Excellent cardiovascular fitness is essential. You will hike for 4–7 hours each day, with a demanding 12–15 hour effort on summit day.

Terrain: No ropes or technical climbing skills are required. However, on Day 5 the Barranco Wall involves some scrambling using your hands for balance on rocky sections. While it may look intimidating, most hikers find it manageable, enjoyable, and safe.

The best times to climb are during the dry seasons:

January to mid-March: Warmer temperatures and clearer skies, though nights can still be quite cold.

June to October: The most popular period, offering dry and stable weather, but with higher traffic on the mountain.

Crowds: Lemosho begins on the remote western side, making the first 2–3 days quieter and less crowded than the Machame route.

Scenery: Widely regarded as the most scenic route, it crosses the Shira Plateau and offers expansive western views of the mountain.

Traffic: The route joins the Machame trail on Day 4, so the latter half becomes noticeably busier.

Aside from standard hiking clothing, three items are essential for the Lemosho route:

Sleeping Bag: Temperatures can drop to -15°C (5°F) or lower, so a high-quality 4-season sleeping bag is required.

Waterproof Gear: The trek begins in a rainforest, making reliable rain protection (jacket and pants) essential.

Broken-in Boots: Avoid new footwear. Boots should be waterproof, well-worn, and properly fitted to minimize the risk of blisters.

Sleeping: Accommodation is in mountain tents provided by your operator, typically shared between two trekkers.

Toilets: Basic public “long drop” toilets are available at campsites. For added comfort, many trekkers choose to pay extra for a private portable toilet carried by porters.

Water: Porters collect water from mountain streams and treat it for safe use. You will refill your bottles or hydration bladder each morning and evening
