The trail also begins on the quiet western side of the mountain, where visitor numbers are much lower than on other popular routes. During the first few days, you enjoy peaceful forests, open moorlands, and incredible panoramic views before joining the southern circuit.

The secret to a successful summit relies entirely on gradual acclimatization giving your body ample time to adjust to dropping oxygen levels. The Lemosho Route features an exceptional, elongated altitude profile. It approaches the mountain from the west, allowing for a slow and steady physical adaptation phase over its first few days.

The Landscape Transitions: Walking Through Five Climate Zones

One of the greatest advantages of the Lemosho Route is the stunning geographical variety you will experience every single day. Trekkers cross five distinct ecological zones during the ascent, creating an incredibly rich visual journey and outstanding photography opportunities.

Where Does the Lemosho Route Start?

The journey begins at Lemosho Gate, located on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration, you hike through one of the mountain’s most beautiful rainforest sections.

The forest is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, colourful birds, and giant trees covered with moss. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes into open heathland before reaching the alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone.

Why Choose the Lemosho Route?

1. Exceptional Altitude Acclimatization

Although a 7-day itinerary is available, we strongly recommend the 8-day Lemosho Route for first-time climbers.

The additional day gives your body more time to adapt naturally to high altitude, significantly reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) while increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.

2. Peaceful Trails and Fewer Crowds

Unlike the busy Machame and Marangu Routes, the Lemosho Route begins on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro.

For the first several days, you enjoy peaceful trails, quiet campsites, and a stronger connection with nature before joining the southern circuit.

3. Comfortable Mountain Camping

The Lemosho Route is a camping route that offers a comfortable wilderness experience.

Our porter team arrives ahead of the group each day to prepare spacious mountain tents before you reach camp. Every campsite includes comfortable sleeping arrangements, a dining tent with tables and chairs, private toilet facilities, and freshly prepared meals from our professional mountain chefs.

The Untouched Rainforest (Days 1–2)

The journey begins at the remote Londorossi Gate.

The first two days take you through a dense, pristine montane rainforest canopy. Because the western side of the mountain receives far fewer visitors than the southern gates, the trails remain beautifully quiet.

You will hike beneath ancient trees draped in moss while looking for black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and colourful bird species that inhabit this lush environment.

The Vast Shira Plateau (Days 3–4)

As you climb above the forest, the scenery changes into heath and moorland before opening onto the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the world’s largest high-altitude volcanic plateaus.

Walking across this vast landscape provides breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s majestic Kibo Peak, making it one of the most scenic sections of the entire climb.

The High Alpine Desert (Days 5–6)

The landscape changes again as you enter the rugged alpine desert.

Here, vegetation becomes sparse and volcanic rock dominates the terrain. The trail climbs to the famous Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp.

This important “climb high, sleep low” section helps your body acclimatize naturally while increasing red blood cell production.

During this stage, you will also climb the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting and rewarding highlights of the Lemosho Route.

The Arctic Summit Zone (Days 7–8)

Your final challenge begins at Barafu Camp shortly before midnight.

Walking slowly beneath a sky filled with stars, you continue your ascent toward Stella Point before finally reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Watching the sunrise from the Roof of Africa is one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire adventure.

After celebrating your achievement, you begin your descent via the Mweka Route.

What Is the Success Rate of the Lemosho Route?

The Lemosho Route has one of the highest success rates on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Approximate success rates are:

  • 7-Day Lemosho: 85–90%
  • 8-Day Lemosho: Over 90%

The extra day allows your body more time to adjust to high altitude, making the climb safer and more enjoyable.
