A carefully designed seven-day trek that maximizes acclimatization while showcasing the spectacular scenery of Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro lies just three degrees south of the equator in northeastern Tanzania. Standing at 5,895 meters, it is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. This iconic peak is formed by three volcanic cones Shira, Mawenzi, and the highest, Kibo which is home to the summit  Uhuru Peak.

The 7-Day Machame Route  often called the Whiskey Route  is one of the most scenic and popular paths to the summit. This route offers a gradual ascent that allows for better acclimatization while taking climbers through a variety of breathtaking landscapes  from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and glacial summit zones.

At Colours African Tours and Safaris  we organize expertly guided climbs throughout the year with daily departures available. Day 6 Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp

Very early in the morning, around midnight, you will begin your final push to the summit. This is the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek, both physically and mentally. Temperatures are extremely cold at this altitude, and the wind can be strong, so staying warm and pacing yourself is essential.

You will ascend in the darkness for several hours, taking short, frequent breaks to conserve energy. As you near Stella Point (5,756 m / 18,900 ft), the first rays of the sunrise over Mawenzi Peak will emerge—a truly breathtaking sight and one of the most memorable moments on the mountain.

From Stella Point, a short climb brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). Here you can celebrate reaching the Roof of Africa, take photos, and soak in the incredible views of glaciers, valleys, and the surrounding peaks.

After spending some time at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a well-earned lunch. The trail is rocky and can be hard on the knees, so trekking poles are recommended. From Barafu, you continue descending through the alpine desert into the forest, finally arriving at Mweka Camp in the late afternoon. The upper forest may be misty or rainy at this time.

At Mweka Camp, you can relax, enjoy your final dinner on the mountain, and rest after an unforgettable journey to the top of Africa.

Day 7 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On your final day, you will complete the descent through the forest to Mweka Gate, where you can collect your official summit certificate  a memento of your incredible achievement on Africa’s highest peak.

At the lower elevations, the trail may be wet and muddy, so take care as you navigate the forest path. From the gate, it’s approximately an additional hour’s walk to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.

This is a celebratory and reflective day, giving you the chance to enjoy the lush scenery of the mountain’s lower slopes one last time and share stories of your summit experience with your fellow climbers. Once back in Moshi  you can relax, shower, and enjoy a comfortable night’s rest, completing your unforgettable Kilimanjaro journey.
